August 2013 in Colorado, Part I – Dodging the monsoon

I was lucky enough to be able to take my 3rd week-ish long vacation during the summer, and finally get back to Colorado. I was hoping to get out of what had been a very heavy monsoon season to that point in northern Arizona. What actually happened is that the monsoon mostly left Arizona, and moved east to get New Mexico and Colorado. Continue reading

Nevada/California 4th of July trip: Part III

I started off July with a few near drive-up peaks in California west of Reno, and waited out an active weather pattern.  Fortunately, the weather was getting better the farther west one would go from Reno, so this looked like the day to climb Lassen Peak, the southernmost Cascade volcano.  I’d say that it doesn’t get much more American than visiting one of our National Parks on Independence Day! But, it was getting up to more like 92 degrees in the afternoon at around 5000 feet as opposed to 100 degrees last weekend, so I decided to brave the heat. Continue reading

North Carolina peakbagging trip: Day 5

My knees were actually feeling a little better after the easy hiking day and the weather again was supposed to just be afternoon thunderstorms.  So, Friday morning I headed west about 20 miles on the Blue Ridge Parkway to a cluster of three little peaks, all with summit trails. Continue reading
